A neonatologist is a pediatrician with extensive training in caring for babies (neonates) who are sick and require intensive care after birth. The neonatologist coordinates the care for the majority of babies in the NICU. At times, the neonatologist might consult with other specialists to help with your baby's care.

A NICU is the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit within a hospital, caring for very sick or premature babies.

Sunflower Neonatology Associates was founded in 2004 by Dr. Kathleen Weatherstone, MD, to provide family-centered, evidence-based medical care for very ill and premature infants.

Our neonatologists staff the neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) of the four HCA Midwest hospitals in the Kansas City region and at Providence Medical Center. Additionally, the Sunflower Neonatology team provides care in the well baby nurseries at Overland Park Regional, Menorah Medical Center and Providence Medical Center. Consultative services are provided at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
