Neonatologists and NICUs
A neonatologist is a pediatrician with extensive training in caring for babies (neonates) who are sick and require intensive care after birth. The neonatologist coordinates the care for the majority of babies in the NICU. At times, the neonatologist might consult with other specialists to help with your baby's care.
A NICU is the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit within a hospital, caring for very sick or premature babies.
Welcome to Sunflower Neonatology Associates
Sunflower Neonatology Associates was founded in 2004 by Dr. Kathleen Weatherstone, MD, to provide family-centered, evidence-based medical care for very ill and premature infants.
Our neonatologists staff the neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) of the HCA Midwest hospitals in the Kansas City region and at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Additionally, the Sunflower Neonatology team provides care in the well baby nurseries at Overland Park Regional, Menorah Medical Center and Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
Sunflower Neonatology also employs pediatric hospitalists able to see children admitted to Overland Park Regional Medical Center and Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Overland Park Regional Medical Center has a Kids Express for emergent care. One goal of Kids Express is to have little to no wait times for pediatric care with access to a dedicated pediatric inpatient unit, if necessary.
